About Àṣẹ

The goal of Àṣẹ is to explore, inspire and illuminate paths and possibilities for us to consider and pursue as a community in an effort to complete our mental emancipation. We hope to do this through an exploration of art and ideas, popular culture and politics, public health and social and behavioral science, social ecology and spirituality and the fertile connections that lie at the intersections of Black life, love, and liberation.

A great deal of important work that Black social scientists engage in goes largely unnoticed and unrecognized by the broader Black communities—to our detriment. Toward that end, one of the goals of Àṣẹ is to assist in raising the awareness of those resources, ideas and healing modalities as well as the constellation of resources and knowledge that are available to our communities, and to bring the broader communities who could benefit from the expertise, skills and services into contact and conversation with the numerous healers, while bringing those healers into closer contact and conversation with the folks.

If it is true that knowledge is indeed power, then our hope is that this effort makes us all a little more powerful—better positioned to define our own reality. While there are no guarantees, it is our most earnest desire that we will learn something new that is useful, and what is more that we will learn something powerfully useful about ourselves that aids in our ongoing quest to be mo' betta.

Àṣẹ!
